Slums In Calangute

Some Scars are visible, others aren't : living the Slum Life

Another day of distributing health packs, this time it was the coastal town of Calangute, we took around 70 health packs but in the end returned with 20 as many of the families had returned to their villages for the school holidays. Heena again came along and helped with the distribution and of course the language which will always be a problem for me. The children were all well behaved, even in the large area where around 40 children lived.

After Calangute and on the way home we stopped off at another small area in Assagao which was introduced to us by Daz and Caz who accompanied us on a few distribution runs in April.

First Signs Of Rain

A coupe of Slum Kids Running To Us during the monsoon

The first signs of rain arrived today, although nothing more than a few drops on your face, Heena joined us to give out donations to a reduced number of children who live close to a river where many of their parents are involved in the sand extraction from the river bed. Normally there are well over 30 or 40 children but today only 15 remained as many had traveled back to their villages for the holidays and celebrations. As there were still lots of health packs left, a quick drive up the highway brought us to two more small areas where we gave out to another 15 children and on the way back we visited a couple of local areas where, in total were another 14 children.

The good thing about our work is that we are always in the presence of parents and family members so everyone can be involved, it's great to know how the groups are formed although many times the mothers of the children are somewhat over eager and can be a little disruptive as they try and make sure their child is at the front of the queue, or even not really in the queue. Azadeh & Kung Fu Kid

Kung Fu Kid, Showing His Moves

In March one of our supporters, Azadeh, came to visit and when talking to one of the older children I used to help at Children Walking Tall she was interested to find the boy had the chance to go to Rampur to take part in a Kung Fu tournament. Sadly the boy couldn't afford the cost of travel and admission to the contest, so Azadeh kindly offered to sponsor the costs of travel, accommodation, track suit and tournament fees.

This morning he was dropped off in Mapusa to board his first bus on the long journey which will take two or three days by bus and train. We will keep you up to date on his progress when we hear from him.
